ENTERPRISE CONTENT MANAGEMENT
Enterprise Content Management has become a catch-all term for the management and related processes of unstructured content within and around an organization. It includes a number of domain areas such as Document management, Forms management, Records management, Web Content management, Email and instant messaging, Wiki, blogs, tagging, geospatial and other Enterprise content, Workflow automation related to organizational processes, and Portals and mash-ups as a vehicle for presentment.
In its infancy, ECM was introduced as a more tactical solution for departmental needs around content capture, management, preservation, retrieval, and disposition focused on specific business processes.
The drivers of ECM have shifted towards enterprise processes, usually delivered as a service, that can be consistently reapplied enterprise-wide. This approach to ECM has shifted it from a tactical tool to an enterprise platform that supports the majority of business processes, business strategy, and goals.
Because many of the benefits derived from ECM relate to consistent, repetitive processes that just so happen to rely on documents and other content, there is a very tight relationship between ECM, process improvement, and process automation.
